In Turkish culture, gold is far more than jewellery. It belongs to life's most important celebrations and stands for closeness, blessing and care.
Typical pieces at a glance
Gold at weddings and engagements
At Söz (promise), Nişan (engagement) and Düğün (wedding), gold is traditionally given – as congratulations and as a financial head start for the couple. Gold coins and bangles are often put on the couple in front of all the guests.
Bilezik – the bangles
The classic Turkish gold bangles (Bilezik) are mostly 22 carat (916) and are happily worn as a set. They combine traditional patterns with lasting value and are a typical gift at festivities.
916 gold (22 carat) is noticeably higher in carat than the 585 (14 carat) common in Germany – with a stronger colour and a higher gold content. More on gold alloys
Sets & gold coins
A Takım – the jewellery set of necklace, bracelet, ring and earrings – is a popular wedding gift. Gold coins such as Çeyrek, Yarım and Tam are added – more on this in our guide to Turkish gold coins.
